Villa Alchemica

A landscape work across two sites — a farm in the Landes, a house in Paris — where the garden's form is not imposed on the ground but derived from what the living, the water, the slope, the wind and the smell already do.

Why

Western landscape knows how to impose a geometry — the great classical tradition. It knows how to let things be — the garden in motion, the wasteland. It does not yet know how to derive a form from the living and account for it. Between the axis and abandonment, a method is missing. That is the gap this project works in.

The idea

The difference between an imposed geometry and a derived geometry is not visual: it is documentary. Every gesture is recorded in a derivation register — the observation, the derivation, the alternatives set aside, and what would have falsified the decision. The form thus becomes contestable, and therefore verifiable.

The concepts

The figure

At Beylongue, the landscape has already produced a figure without being asked: a dam pond whose outline, seen from above, resembles a torso. No one drew it. That is exactly the object of the research.

Next moves

  1. Sound the pond — rowboat, hand line, a grid of twenty points. One morning.
  2. Half a day at the Beylongue town hall — cadastre, stream, boundaries, status of the structure.
  3. Open the register — phase zero — document the three curved figures already present.
